Name: Yusuke Kitagawa
Series: Persona 5
Appearance: In all his underweight glory
Age: 17
Canon Point: 11/20, during the Protagonist’s interrogation
Canon History: Link
Personality: Yusuke is an artist and to him, this is the core of his being. He is an artist and always on the search for beauty. Art means everything to Yusuke. It’s what his life revolves around and everything he bases himself on. This is due to his former guardian, Madarame, who basically made Yusuke only ever focus on his art so he could steal it for himself. Yusuke’s personality is so hyper-focused on this identity that his former mentor imposed on him that other parts of Yusuke’s life are severely lacking. He focuses every aspect of his life on his painting which can come off as a little intense. People often call him weird for this and Yusuke knows people think he’s eccentric. Though he hates being told that and it’s something he’s very sensitive about.

Socially, Yusuke has no clue how to behave. He knows his manners and he can come off as overly polite sometimes. Yet Madarame kept him sheltered as his cash cow because who needs friends when you can just paint all day? It’s easy to become irritated with Yusuke because he bluntly says what’s on his mind without realizing he could have been rude. Yusuke doesn’t intentionally want to be impolite or hurt people. But he’s honest and simply just says what he thinks he should say. If you ask him how you look in something, Yusuke will have no problem telling you it looks bad on you with absolutely no tact. Isn’t that the right thing to do? You can find something that looks better. Certain social cues that may be obvious to most will go over Yusuke’s head but he isn’t a mean-spirited person. He also has a hard time understanding certain emotions, especially within himself, and wants to learn better.

Though Yusuke will try to keep a cool head and come off as calm, he really isn’t that deep down inside. He’s prone to dramatics. When Yusuke feels something, he really feels it. There’s a new art exhibit he gets to go to? He will proclaim how happy he is. If something upsetting happens, he’s immediately feeling like his life is over and he’ll fall to his knees. Does someone do something that offends him? He’s not above an insult that is definitely on purpose that time. This also leaves him very impulsive in his actions. Does he only have enough money for a day’s worth of food? Well okay but what if he gets that new paintbrush he wanted instead? Who needs food? Instant gratification! This also makes him terrible about self-care. He will sacrifice food for something like an art book or new brushes. Art must always come first!

Deep down, there is a lot of sadness and anger in Yusuke. Some of his paintings really give off this vibe, as Ann comments on a painting that Madarame plagiarized as his own that belonged to Yusuke. She comments that it holds a lot of anger in it and Yusuke immediately takes her away from it. In the dancing spin-off of Persona 5, when you can see Yusuke’s room, a painting he is working on gives off a very distressed vibe which the protagonist wonders “Is this supposed to symbolize Yusuke’s mentality?” which speaks a lot about what is going on inside of Yusuke. He grew up as being used as a tool to someone else and that has played a significant role in his mental state as he tries to come to terms with it.

Yusuke is just a very passionate person that sticks to his ideals. He never wants to be the same person as the man that was once like his father. Even as he struggles to understand his emotions and what he wants to accomplish with his art, he'll never let himself stray off the path he has set for himself. Maybe pass out from hunger along it, though.

Abilities: Yusuke has the ability to summon a persona, Goemon, a manifestation of his rebellious spirit based on the Japanese outlaw Ishikawa Goemon. Due to having the highest strength stat out of everybody in the game, many of Goemon’s attacks are based on physical damage that can attack multiple foes on the battlefield and also has the ability to counter attacks and to cause status ailments such as confusion. He does have ice attacks and can learn the strongest attack in that element. This makes Yusuke invulnerable to ice but leaves him with a very heavy weakness to fire.

His abilities are the following:
• Vorpal Blade. Heavy damage to all foes.
• Counterstrike. 15% chance of reflecting a physical attack.
• Mabufudyne. Medium ice damage to multiple foes.
• Bufudyne. Medium ice damage to one foe.
• Brave Blade. Heavy physical damage to one foe.

Yusuke has the ability to cure status ailments with Harisen Recovery with a giant Japanese paper fan and hitting people with it. He can also endure a fatal attack with only one HP left and has the ability of Artist Talk, which he can use to give you another chance to negotiate with enemies. Yusuke also can wield a katana and while he isn’t exactly a sword master, he is at least at an intermediate level and knows how to fight fairly well.

Thanks to Yusuke’s artistic ability, he learns how to replicate skill cards (cards that are used to teach Personas skills they normally wouldn’t be able to learn) onto a blank card by painting them himself. This can take him a few days to complete one, however.
Inventory: His winter Kosei Uniform (the one shown in his appearance image) and a sketchbook--which definitely got destroyed by water!
